Term Explanation Synonym / Example
Mash A mixture of finely ground grains and other nutrients for animal feed.
Meat Manufacturers (Category A, B and C) As per the Meat Food Products Order (MFPO), 1973, meat manufacturers are licensed under category A, B or C.
  • Category 'A': Manufacturer who makes meat food products exclusively from meat of animal(s) slaughtered and dressed in his factory;
  • Category 'B': Manufacturer who makes meat food products exclusively from meat of animal(s) slaughtered and dressed in a recognized slaughterhouse and whose factory is situated in close proximity to such a slaughterhouse;
  • Category 'C': Manufacturer who makes meat food products exclusively from poultry and/or pig meat at places where authorized slaughterhouses do not exist and the total quantity manufactured is less than 30 tonnes per annum. Mesentery A double layer of peritoneum attached to the abdominal wall and enclosing in its fold certain organs of the abdominal viscera.
Mohair Mohair is fine quality hair produced by the Angora goat (the word originates from the Arabic word mukhayyar meaning best fleece).
Monogastric A monogastric animal has a stomach with a single compartment, as compared to ruminants whose stomachs have four distinct compartments.

Mortality Death
Mortality Rate The ratio of total deaths to total population in a specified community or area over a specified period of time. The death rate is often expressed as the number of deaths per 1,000 of the population per year. Also called fatality rate.

Mother Unit A concept started by Keggfarms where Day-old Chicks are raised for three weeks before distribution to poultry rearers. In the three week duration at the mother units, the growing birds are vaccinated.
