Women carrying bundles of grass from the protected village commons The villagers have been harvesting fodder from the three sites since 2002. Every year the sites are opened for four-five days during late October or early December for harvesting grass. On an average more than 75,000 bundles of grass are harvested by villagers every year from the three sites. The direct benefits of improved access and availability of fodder and feed for livestock development has primarily been received by around 40-45 households, who do not have sufficient land to grow fodder for their animals and have to depend on the village commons. After the wasteland regeneration interventions, these households have harvested an average of 60,000 to 65,000 bundles of grass (1-2 kg per bundle) every year from the sites. Earlier these households had to spend a considerable amount of money (about Rs. 500 - 1,000 annually by each household) for buying fodder from distant places. In 2009 over one lakh bundles were harvested by 119 households and token money of Rs. 6,760 was deposited in the GVK. |
