Alphabetical listing of terms used in the SA PPLPP website

Term	Explanation	Synonym / Example
Backyard poultry	Traditional poultry keeping usually by women of poor, marginalized house holds on semi scavenging system as a source of nutrition and supplementary income. Usually small flock of1to10 Desi/improved birds are kept in their backyards or farms
Bedding	Material scattered on the floor of a chicken coop to absorb moisture and manure. Commonly used is straw, hay, rice husk and saw dust etc
Bio-security	Management measures taken to prevent disease causing agents from entering or leaving any place housing animals.
Biotic pressure	The tendency of a species or community to extend its range.
Booster	Vaccination that follows the first in a series.
Breed	A group of chickens within a class having a distinctive body shape and the same general features and weight.
Broiler	A young meat-type chicken, usually 7-8 weeks of age, of either sex, usually weighing between 1 1/2 to 2 Kg.
Broody	The maternal instinct causing a female to set or want to hatch eggs.
Broody hen	A hen that has stopped laying eggs and wants to sit on eggs to hatch them and to brood chicks. This is because of hormonal changes that lead to changes in the behavior and physiology resulting in increased maternal instincts.
Buck (Billy)	A male goat used for breeding.
Buckling	A young male goat.
