LIFE Network seeks entries for the Breed Saviour Award 2011
India, October 2011 - SEVA/LIFE Network (Local Livestock for Empowerment of Rural People), a group of organisations and individuals who promote community-based conservation and development of indigenous livestock breeds, in collaboration with the National Biodiversity Authority are organizing the Breed Saviour awards 2011.
This is the third event in a series, with the first two events being organized in 2009 and 2010 respectively. The Breed Saviour awards recognize pastoralists, traditional livestock keepers, communities and herders’ associations involved in in-situ conservation of local livestock breeds. Additionally, those engaged in improving breeds through selective breeding and improved management practices are also recognized.
Entries are invited in the prescribed format from individuals, organizations and associations who are engaged in conservation of indigenous livestock breeds. In 2009, 24 breeds were conferred the award and in 2010, 20 breeds received the award. These included a variety of breeds of cattle, buffalo, camels, goats, sheep and poultry including ducks. Small ruminant breeds that were conferred the award included the Deccani sheep breed from District Belgaum, Karnataka; the Ganjam goat breed from District Ganjam, Orissa; the Vembur sheep breed from District Thuthukudi, Tamil Nadu; the Boti sheep breed from Pali district, Rajasthan; the Gaddi sheep breed from Kangra, Himachal Pradesh; the Garole sheep breed in 24 Parganas (S) district, West Bengal and the Kachakatti black sheep from the Madurai district, Tamil Nadu. Two breeds of poultry (the Hanseel from the Mayurbhanj district of Orissa and the Dhinkia from the Koraput district of Orissa) were also awarded. A cooperative society in the Belgaum district of Karnataka was awarded for facilitating access to remunerative markets for products of the Deccani sheep wool and strengthening women SHGs to take forward these interventions on their own.
The last date for receiving entries is 2nd November 2011, and the awards will be given away at a function in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, tentatively scheduled during the third week of December, 2011.
