Molina - The Harbinger of Development
Molina is a distressed woman of village Walia at Upazilla Lalpur in Natore District in Bangladesh. Earlier she was enjoying happy life with her van puller husband, a son and a daughter. Her husband was the only earning person of her family. But 8 years ago, her husband died in a road accident. Her family fell in distress after the death. Molina left her husband’s house and took shelter in her parent’s house with the children. She, with her children, became a burden to her parent’s family. Molina started looking for work in order to be able to make a sustainable living.
She felt interested to rear poultry as she thought it could be helpful to maintain her livelihood, but money for investment was a problem. To solve this, she joined the BRAC village organization as a member. She got Tk 8,000 as loan from BRAC within 2 weeks. In the meantime, she also got training from BRAC. She started a small layer farm by using forty pullets (grown up birds). Molina got her blessings after a hard work of three months when the hens began to lay eggs. She was becoming well to do. Later on, she added a new farm with 100 poultry birds as an extension of the investment. Her project was increasing day-by-day which also gave deep interest to the neighbours. Her acceptance to the family was being increased.
Now Molina is the chairperson of village organization of BRAC. She is able to bear the educational expenses of her children.
Bird flu is a panic to the people of Bangladesh. Molina is aware of that and she is taking preventive measures with the villagers to save her locality. The means used by them are poultry vaccination, bio-security and effective management. For sustainable farm management, she ensures good supply of feed, medicine, vaccine and shelter.
Now her intention is to reduce nutritional problem and work towards development of socio-economic status of the nation.
