Geographical Areas
The geographical focus of activities in the previous two phases of the SA PPLPP programme (Phase 1 from 2006 to March 2009 and Phase 2 from April 2009 to June 2012) was in three selected South Asian countries – Bangladesh, Bhutan and India. A number of good practices and field interventions in the three core sectors of SA PPLPP’s work – (i) common lands and the impact of development and regeneration of these lands on smallholder livestock rearers; (ii) smallholder poultry rearing and (iii) small ruminant rearing were identified and documented in collaboration with programme partners (BRAC in Bangladesh, Department of Livestock Services in Bhutan, and BAIF Development Research Foundation in India). These good practice documents and related literature are available on the SA PPLPP website.
The focus of activities in the on-going third phase of the programme (that commenced in July 2012) is on selected states in India, where smallholder livestock rearing (primarily small ruminant rearing and smallholder poultry rearing) are key livelihood activities for the rural poor.
In India, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have been identified as priority states where SA PPLPP will initially focus its interventions related to supporting pilot initiatives to strengthen small ruminant and smallholder poultry rearing. In both states, livestock rearing is a key livelihood activity for the rural poor, supplemented by single cropping on primarily rain-fed land. Both states are contiguous and this would facilitate cross-learning and experience sharing.
