Visit to Biogas Plants by Bangladesh Team

The team headed by Dr. Md. A. Saleque, CTC-Bangladesh team was accompanied by Dr. Harun, CTA, and Mr. Galib, Assistant Manager. Mr. Rafiq, Program Implementation officer, BASA demonstrated the entire project. 

The visit unveiled some unique practices of BASA. The biogas plants, are of two types: one runs by poultry litter and the other by cow dung. Each has a different set up  and fulfills the cooking and electricity demand of a single household.

The initial set up cost Tk25000-Tk30000 is relatively high and maybe affordable only to persons who choose a substitute gas cylinders that cost Tk1400 per month. People who rely on available supply of wood or dry leaves may not find this high initial investment economically viable. Therefore, the feasibility of its commercial production is yet to be looked into.

However, this practice has some other positive impacts given that it is a very good waste management technique. Furthermore, the biogas plants convert poultry litter and cow dung into manure which make the cultivable lands fertile. Thus, besides some constraints, this practice is a milestone for others to follow.
