Changthangi
May 06, 2013
The Changthangi breed is found in the Changthang region of Ladakh. They are strongly-built, large-framed animals with good fleece cover which has an extraordinarily long staple.
Migratory flock sizes range from 200 to 300 animals whereas stationary flocks consist of 10 to 15 animals. Sheep and goats are combined in flocks, generally in a ratio of 30:70. Some cross-breeding with Merinos has been initiated for improving greasy-wool production and quality for fine apparel-wool. Animals are usually shorn twice a year, generally in May/June and September/October, but in some cases shearing takes place only once a year, in July/ August. Greasy-wool production ranges from 1 to 1.5 kg per animal per year.
The wool of the breed is of superior carpet quality.
