On November 9, 2015, on the occasion of the State Foundation Day, the shepherds of Uttarakhand received a bounty with the launch of Mobile Veterinary Vans under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), a scheme of the Government of India. Five vans were flagged off by the Honourable Minister of Animal Husbandry Shri Pritam Singh Panwar; also present on the occasion were Dr Ranbir Singh, Principal Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Sheep & Goat Husbandry, Government of Uttarakhand, Dr Kamal Mehrotra, Director, Animal Husbandry, and Dr Avinash Anand, CEO, Uttarakhand Sheep and Wool Development Board (USWDB), Directorate of Animal Husbandry, Dehradun.

The vans will ply in the districts of Bageshwar, Tehri Garhwal, Pitthoragarh, Uttarakashi and Chamoli, which have the highest numbers of sheep in the state. Each van is equipped with necessary materials and personnel for providing essential and primary veterinary care to goats, sheep and other farm animals along the route. It is expected that they will cater to demands of livestock-keepers for deworming, vaccination, castration, first aid, medication, and wool shearing.
