Egg prices have shot up abnormally throughout Bangladesh as layer chicken farming marked a drastic slump given the fear of bird flu among farmers.

This is a very critical situation requiring urgent addressal because the rate of layer chicken farming has dropped over 50 % in the last one year creating loss of livelihood. If concrete steps are not taken to revive the sector, the situation will deteriorate further with farmers increasingly avoiding layer chicken farming due to panic and suspicions about the repetition of outbreaks in winter. According to poultry experts ensuring biosecurity as well as other preventive measures can save the sector.
