These birds show characteristics similar to those of Desi Birds - small compact body, bluish thin shanks with coloured plumage, hardy, laying tan coloured eggs. The Satpuda is an outcome of specific breeding approaches aiming to utilize maximum heterosis in the progeny that cause numerous dispersion of plumage feather patterns and colours variation. Satpuda's body conformation is like that of indigenous chicken with multiple colour mosaic plumage, pinkish skin, dull blue thinner shanks and single combed. Its leaner and less watery carcass is suitable for people of all ages with more edible meat than Desi chicken. It is a hardy bird with low mortality rate. At farms it grows to 1.0 kg body weight in about 2.6 kg feed and a 200-250 gm grower takes 50-60 days to attain 1 kg body weight under scavenging system. The Satpuda-Desi exhibits 4-times faster growth rate than the Desi, during juvenile period, up to 8 week of age. Under backyard system, 2 growers weighing 250 gms attain approximately 1 kg body weight in 50 – 60 days. The ratio of muscle to bone is higher in Satpuda-Desi as compared to Desi making it tastier. Furthermore, low fat content of carcass and less closely adhered muscles to bones makes it more acceptable in the meat market.
