The per capita meat consumption in India is estimated at 5.5 kg per year, which is about 50% of that recommended by the Indian Council of Medical Research. Very little of the meat consumed in India is pre-processed. An estimate of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) suggests that the level of processing of meat in India is just about 6%, which includes pork and beef. The meat market is predominantly a wet market, with consumers preferring fresh meat as against frozen.
