The average annual return per animal in the Tumkur district of Karnataka is estimated to be Rs 1,100 approximately, for a herd size of 100 ewes and 4 rams. A lamb-fattening unit (with 126 lambs to begin with and 13% mortality) in the same district yields Rs 1,000 per lamb over a six-month period, with an initial investment of Rs 400,000 (Rs 300,000 received as loan). It may, therefore, be assumed that the average annual income of a goat rearer/shepherd is in the range of Rs 50,000 to 100,000.
