In Karnataka, livestock rearing forms an integral part of the farming ecosystem, and a large part of the shepherds’ income comes from penning their herds on farms along the migratory route. Apparently, this income is received round the year, except during the monsoons when the rains are intense. Traditionally, the families engaged in shepherding belonged to the Kuruba community, but some others have taken to it for its economic returns.
