Tiruchy Black

Tiruchy Black, also known as Tiruchy Karungurumbai, is found in the Tiruchirappalli, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Salem, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Dharampuri districts of Tamil Nadu.
They are small animals with a black coat. While the males are horned, the ewes are polled. The ears are short and directed downward and forward. The tail is short and thin and the fleece is extremely coarse, hairy and open. In farmers' flocks lambing percentage is between 70 to 80% and the litter size is single.
Average fleece yield is 400 gm. According to the 18th Livestock Census of 2007 there are 78,343 Tiruchy Black sheep in the country. (Refer to the maps below)
