This study is an annexure to the document “Common Land Development and Poor Livestock Keepers - Experiences from Common Land Development in the States of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in India”

The study highlights quantitative changes, using satellite imagery following community protection and conservation of common lands.

The study indicates a significant improvement in vegetative cover in the areas protected by local communities over the past 10 to 13 years. Changes in these lands are analysed on the basis of:

  1. Changes within the watershed,
  2. Changes in lands leased to the community for management and conservation, and
  3. Changes in the adjacent watershed area with similar features as the study area

The analysis demonstrates that community management of common lands results in positive outcomes in protected areas compared to non-protected ones and presents a strong argument in favour of community protection and governance of common lands.
