The Satpuda - Replicas of Native Chicken in Rural Poultry Production
Jun 29, 2011
This Good Practice Note documents interventions by a private company, Yashwant Agritech Pvt Ltd in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. The company developed a high-productive poultry bird called the Satpuda Desi, suitable for rearing in harsh agro-climatic regions. The note documents how backyard and small-scale poultry rearing can be supported through private initiatives, including private hatcheries, provided appropriate policy and institutional conditions are in place.
This initiative has benefitted over 40,000 rural households in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, and has provided a means of complementary livelihood to marginal farmers, and in particular women farmers. Further, advisory services, knowledge exchange through informal meetings and marketing support to poultry rearers by the company has further enhanced their incomes contributing to community empowerment.
